I've just received an email apparently from claiming that my broadband usage is close to the limit this month see below

Your usage allowance is near its limit -
what you need to know

Dear Customer,

We thought you'd like to know that, so far in August, you've used more than 7GB of your 10GB monthly usage allowance for your BT Total Broadband Option 1 service.

In accordance with our Broadband Usage Policy, if you exceed your usage allowance, you'll be charged for additional usage in units of 5GB, at £5 per 5GB. Charges will apply from the second month that the usage allowance is exceeded. If you do exceed your allowance, we'll tell you at the end of the month and let you know the amount of any additional usage charges, which will be added to your next bill.

Great news! To help you keep track of your usage we provide a usage monitor which shows on a daily basis, how much of your allowance you have used and how much is remaining. To access the usage monitor you will need the log-in details for your online account. If you haven't set one up then you can register at www.bt.com/mybt or if you already have an online account click here to access the usage monitor.

To avoid usage charges, you can always upgrade to one of our broadband products with a higher usage allowance or go for unlimited usage. To find out about your options and to upgrade, please go to http://www.bt.com/broadband/upgrade

For more information on usage allowances and charges, please see our Broadband Usage Policy.

Best wishes,

BT Total Broadband team

The thing is though that I'm nowhere near the limit, I've checked and it was sent to my hotmail address not my BT one.
So am I right to assume ths is a scam?

I didn't check my usage via that link btw I went the usual way.
Easy way to find out..if you have hours to spare waiting for them to answer. Ring them up They do charge extra as mentioned though.
The link is genuine
I would say so, usually anything starting Dear Customer is a bit of ag ive away. If the genuine Company contacts you they will start off with your name. Also as you can check your account online with BT any time why E mail you?
Question Author
Could do, it just rang alarms when it was sent to my non BT email address.
Question Author
I should also add that there was other links in the original email that have'nt pasted. I am not intending to click any of them.
Question Author
I'll do that, thank for the link.
This is a standard BT email. I've had it once. Have you checked the usage monitor? Either way, it's the end of the month anyway so presumably they'll start from scratch tomorrow.
Question Author
Yes I've checked my usage it's less than 3gb this month so it still seems a bit strange to me.
My mother has also just received the same email she has told me . So I'm not convinced that it's legit and have deleted it without response.
The email states that if you exceed your agreed usage limit BT will charge you the extra on a subsequent bill, or you can choose to increase your limit via the BT website. Where is the scam?
Question Author
It's been sent to an email address that is nothing to do with my BT account and it contains inaccurate information.
I have had a couple of these but its always at the end of the month so I ignore it.
