bolts from dismantled item

the item and bolts will go into long term storage I will put the bolts in a little plastic sandwich bag, but could I put something in the bag like wd40 or something to keep the bolts from rushing up?

how about dipping them in oil and then wrapping in an oily cloth?

Either should do. How about putting them in a jar with a screw top and covering them with the oil. You'd be sure they wouldn't rust then.

The mechanism by which ferrous material rusts is the interaction of the metal with oxygen within the atmosphere, forming ferrous oxide (rust). Oil, grease or some other coating stops rusting by preventing the oxygen reaching the surface of the metal. So even within a sealed container, rusting will be limited once the available oxygen has formed ferrous oxide.

Therefore, besides coating the bolts in grease, sealing within plastic bag (or other container) will help.

If you keep them in a jar in a warm, dry place, like an airing cupboard, they are unlikely to rust.
