63
-25
____
38
Is this what you meant?
63
-25 but you then have to do all the borrowing, so 13-5 and then 5-2
they change the formulas so much at school now though i cant keep up
(and because the 3 is less than the 5 you have to "borrow" 1 from the tens column)

Thats it.. thanks guys.. yes I forgot about borrowing!! sandyroe.. I didnt mean I couldnt do the sum!! just forgot how to teach it to my son!
I'm glad you got there - just a word of caution though....maths teaching is done differently now. The resuts are the saem, but the little fella might get confused by having two different mthods shown to him.
Some general ideas here - and will aligned wok at home with modern in school teaching methods:

yeh it is very different now, i'm a teaching assistant in school and got told off by showing the children the column way in addition, i still don't get the way they teach them now, its so much harder
Good job you don't work in a shop : )
It may be easier at this stage to use an approach which may be easier to understand. Start with 63. Subtract 20 initially. That gives 43. Then subtract the other 5. That gives 38.
