Laptop battery flat or something else??

I have a laptop that hasn't been used for maybe 8 months due to the screen being cracked. Got it out toay to look at getting the screen repaired and when I plugged it in absolutely nothing happened-could it be that the battery has just given up through non use or would it be something else, was fully functioning before screen issue. Are batteries expensive to replace??
