Media player problem

I am using Windows 7 Home Premium with Windows Media Player 12 as my default music player.
When playing music, the music jumps, sounding similar to an LP which has been damaged. It is very annoying and happens at least once on every track I play, regardless of what music I am playing.
Can anyone suggest why this is happening and if there is some way to rectify it?
Thanks.

Have you any "Roxio" software installed? I seem to remember it making my WMP stutter a bit.

No, I don't have any 'Roxio' software and it happens even when no other programmes are running.
Where are the music tracks stored/located exactly?
Other processes running .. if not kept in check .. can effect the resources available to play certain media.
TBH .. Windows Media Player is crap.

You ought to use something like Winamp (probably the best music formats player)
