nightmare at 5am
13 Answers
was woken up yesterday at 5am to a huge crashing noise...the ceiling in my spare bedroom had come down along with a huge amount of water......the central heating pipe had somehow corroded....have spent the last 36 hours trying to get some order...ripped up and disposed of carpet..also matress , bed clothes etc...what a mess... waiting for a chappie to call tonight with an estimate for insurance..do not expect things to be back to normal until the new year now....Never had to deal with the like before..am I being pessamistic in not expecting much 'till after New year..or will it move quicker...?... Must admit I had a bit of a bawl yesterday morning when it happened..have quite enough to deal with at Xmas without this hassle....woe is me....

you could be lucky enough to get it all agreed straight away and then your only wait will be for the work to be done. The weather is quite mild at the moment still so i doubt the insurers have a huge backlog to deal with.
What a scare though, no wonder you had a good cry, hopefully itll be sorted with minimal fuss

Red...yes I had to explain to insurers that the room had to be stripped as there was so much residual water lying, the floor was in danger of falling through to the down stairs....Was told to take photos...have the windows open and with a gale blowing through from the attic I hope it will dry out quite quickly....hope to get all quotes sent off by weekend....
Spare bedroom ? Look at it this way, could have been a lot worse.
I can only guess but it seems to me if the insurers 'get their skates on' to estimate the claim, then you would be free to find the tradesman of your choice fairly quickly. Urgent jobs do tend to cost though, and the problem is that it may be the less well recommended that has time to drop everything and get yours done.
Unsure if you were expecting to put guests up in that room over Xmas, but my preference would be to shut the door on it, and get it done on a normal timetable rather than rush it.

When this happened to us the insurance company sent the loss adjusters round the same day and they bought loads of big dehumidifiers and heaters with them to help dry it out. I seem to recall getting a cheque for the damaged items about 10 days later and I got to keep all the heaters and stuff for a month to make sure it was properly dried out. They organised the new carpets for about 6 weeks after the flood I think.
waitng for carpet people to give me their quote..then can get on with it..bad time of year to get things done though...if I can at least get the hole repaired then the decoration etc can wait 'till after holiday time..have a force 8 gale blowing through house from the attic....Thanks for your kind words of comfort...ok about it now...s***e happens....
