Generators are used all over the world in everyday life. For example hospitals have them incase there is a power cut. This stops vital life saving equipment stopping. They are also used in and around the home. Also in remote areas where if the power were to fail and would'nt be on for a few hours people have some means of generating eletricity.

Thanks thats a great help.
Additionally, all jet airplane manufacturers, (engine manufacturers actually) use generators rather than alternators (as in cars) to produce the electrical current required for the aircraft...
Diesel trains are actually big diesel generators making electricity that then power the electric wheel motors. A lot of ships are also diesel-electric as it is known, since it means that the engines can be sited wherever's best then the power sent down easy to route cables to electric motors attached to the propellers.
Der, aren't the most obvious examples those being used in power stations?  As such it's obvious why they're vital.  Admittedly they do produce a.c. but they're still generators.  Facinating things, did you know that the rotors are in an atmosphere of Hydrogen, can you guess why?
