oil based emulsion on wall

Hi, just wondered if someone could help. In one of my bedrooms, all the walls have been painted with an oil based paint. So ordinary water based emulsion does not take, it just flakes off. I have papered the walls so far, and painted over the paper. Is there anything else I can do ? I would like to have painted walls in this room, but not oil based paint as its so smelly.

If it is oil based it is not oil emulsion. Emulsion in always water based.

Paper and emulsion would be fine, Kass. Otherwise, a modern equivalent to glue size is PVA sealer....

Hi, try using an electric sander on the walls to get rid of as much of the top shiny surface as you can then sugar soap them and rinse. After doing this emulsion should take fine. The first coat will probably take a while to dry but further coats should dry as normal.

Do you just paint the PVA sealer on ? Thanks - I think I'd better get someone in to do it for me ! Sounds like alot of work !

There is not much work involved really, just a little effort. Even if you go the PVA route you will still need to wash down with Sugar soap to degrease, preferably after rubbing down with a medium sandpaper to give it 'key'
