Decus et Tutamen means "an ornament and a defence"

Historically coins were made of silver and the practice of clipping or filing some of the precious metal from the edge of the coin was widespread. This is one of the reasons why coins have decorated edges so at to be able to tell at a glance whether or not the coin has been clipped. Thus, this edge decoration was both an ornament and a defence, which is where we started!

Kinda irrelevant but thought id post anyway....

Me and my friends used to joke that one inscription - 'i'm gwlad + pleidiol wyf' presumably welsh, represented 'i'm glad and pleased with this'.
