any ideas?

AFAIK there is no real difference.
There's no such thing as USB 1 or 2 leads. They are the same thing

there are different types of usb socket...

i have a lead with 2 heads on it... one cannot cope with the higher speeds of usb 2.0 or 3.0 etc, but it has no markings on it... i also have other leads that won't work with some of the more modern devices.

i need to know which leads are for which devices and sockets..
Fix an identifying label to the lead when you first get it.
"there are different types of usb socket... "

Yes there is, but that's not relevant to your question.

USB1 and USB2 cables are identical and will work on with either USB1 or USB2 devices, USB3 leads are another matter and are totally different (although they are backwards compatible)

The type of connector on the lead is purely a physical difference (largely these will be selected based on the space available on a device for a connector, a large connector won't fit on a small device such as a phone) so when it comes to USB1 and USB2 it's simply a matter of if the plug fits the hole it's the correct cable.
