The car may fail to start. I had the problem with my merc and it just wouldn't start. It took the garage awhile to figure the problem but when a new sensor was put in it started.
The crankshaft sensor tells the car’s ECU where the engine is in its rotational cycle. This information (fed to the ECU) is critical in terms of the ECU providing the ignition spark at the correct time to each spark plug (and other control functions).

For this reason alone, without a signal from the crankshaft sensor, the engine will not run.

The engine warning light will be on – and interrogation by an OBD scanner should identify the fault.

That said – last year my other half’s Renault was running OK with the engine warning light on – the OBD scanner showed it to be a fault with the crankshaft sensor. When replaced, the fault cleared OK. I suspect that the crankshaft sensor signal was out of specification, but still good enough to signal the ECU.
Why won't you tell us what car you have?

crankshaft sensors throw up different symptons depending what car you are talking about!
My sons Alfa 147 had problems with the crank sensor last year. It would run for a while and then cut out and fail to restart. Leave it to cool for a while and off it went again. Engine warning light was on most of the time but not all. Apparently it's a common fault with Alfas. New crank sensor cured it no bother.
