Collecting Green Bottle Tops.

Not certain where to post this, but here goes.

Does anyone know of any registered charity that collects green milk bottle tops? Time and again people say they are collecting for a disabled child who will receive a wheelchair if they collect their weight in bottle tops or something similar. But, to me, it appears to be a myth - no-one can actually name the child or charity.

It does appear that people are collecting them, but it's always for a friend, or a friend of a friend - or even a friend of a friend of a friend!

I've tried looking into this and although I haven't found one charity that is actually collecting these tops; I have found a company in Sheffield that will take them. They pay £100 per tonne for clean and 'pure' tops, with all foil from the inside and sticky labels removed, delivered to their recycling plant.

I understand 650,000 tops weighs approximately 1 metric tonne. Now let's say conservatively that an electric wheelchair is around £500, that would mean it would take THREE AND A QUARTER MILLION green bottle tops to provide a disabled child with a wheelchair.

Surely that would be a lot of hassle to provide a wheelchair for a child, when other methods such as a sponsored marathon or similar would provide the money a lot quicker?

Can anyone provide me with the name of a genuine charity that actually collects these green bottle tops? I'm asking, because someone has approached my local radio station asking for listeners to start collecting them.

My word you've put a lot of efort into this, I don't know of a charity that does this but if other people want to collect them then surely that's up to them, and even if it's not for a child's wheelchair etc surely it's pretty long winded and awkward to be a scam?

Sorry to use your posting wiltsman Just when you mention this .Is there still any charties collecting used stamps .We used to send then for retired donkey or summit like that any ideas.

Weecalf, I know used stamps are still in demand. I think a lot of them are sold abroad by charities. I'm sorry but I don't have any names of charities that are currently collecting postage stamps. Perhaps someone may read your message and can help you.

I once heard that about 60 drink cans makes 1 kilogramme of aluminium. Would that not be quicker to get you your wheelchair?

Quite agree Jonny Boy, that's why I posed the question. As far as I know there is no disabled child requiring a wheelchair paid for by the collection of green bottle tops.

This thing about collecting bottle tops has been doing the rounds for at least ten years I would say. The little girl would now be a young woman in need of a larger wheelchair!!

I believe the figure is close- it's around 72 cans. These are worth about 50p per k5 once crushed and collated into a huge quantity

Hardly a scam, but it sounds to be to be a poor taste joke / urban legend type thing that a particular colour of bottle top is particularly required. I mean, why would it ? Are the beverage supplies going to try to ram the old ones back or to reuse them ?

Whilst I may be wrong I suspect you have found the best destination for your collection. As scrap metal it must be worth something, but it is a pain in the neck if you have to remove foil and labels instead of the recycler just burning it off or whatever.

Meanwhile maybe you can contact the radio station to ask who actually wants them and what use are they putting them to. You either nip another session of this in the bud, or miraculously find someone who has a genuine use for them. But I'd not hold my breath on the latter.
