It was reported in The Sunday Times in a full page article that a 75mg dose of aspirin taken daily can help to prevent a heart attack and cancer. It said that a lot of doctors take aspirin. If preferred, soluble aspirin can be used.

I know. You have to be very careful though. Don't take aspirin on a empty stomach. It can have fatal consequences.
I was told that as I was on statins, I should avoid aspirin and other medicines which list aspirin as an ingredient.
You don't take asprin on a daily basis unless it's prescribed for you, it can cause a lot of problems.
Soluble aspirin is good in a white wash :)

It doesn't *have* to be prescribed.
For example if you are going on a long haul flight - all you need to do is check your other medication for contraindications (if you take any that is)
There is no harm whatsoever i taking a daily dose of aspirin with statins welshy.

chi-chi.....all drugs MAY cause a lot of problems, but low dose aspirin daily is as safe as it goes.
ummmm

\\\It can have fatal consequences.\\\

Phew! that's a bit OTT....FATAL
My BIL's Dad was rushed to hospital because his stomach was bleeding (don't know all the details) from taking aspirin on an empty stomach.
So why would my GP tell me that I shouldn't? Is he being ultra cautious as I have constant low blood pressure?
as sqad says, that dose is fine, but should be taken with food.
Off out to breakfast.....will deal with comments on my return.
lol...
Welshy, your doc might have reasons but I know plenty of people who are taking life long prescriptions for both.
I can still remember the pain of the indigestion I suffered from taking a couple of aspirin when using strong steroids for a chest condition.

The Sunday Times article stated that the best way of taking a 75mg aspirin tablet is ideally at night with a glass of milk. The stomach produces less acid later in the day and the milk will provide protection from possible side effects of aspirin.
The risks are minimal compared with that of getting cancer, which willaffect more than one in three Britons.
Three papers published in The Lancet last week confirm that aspirin has a powerful anti- cancer effect, as well as helping to prevent heart attacks and strokes
'with food' doesn't necessarily mean a full English =)
I also take statins - the top dose unfortunately, although if it keeps me healthy I don't mind. I took a small dose of aspirin for years - prescribed - then there were adverse reports and my doctor stopped prescribing them. Now it is back again to good reports. I wish they would make up their minds. It's like being on a seesaw. At the moment I am not taking them but I am a great believer in living as long as you can. Now - do I take them - or do I don't?
My MIL loves these types of stories, she saw this a couple of years ago and instead of taking the 1/2 tablet that was suggest took 5 asprin a day (she wanted to be sure she did'nt get a heart attack)!!!!

She ended up in hospital puking blood up from a burst ulcer caused by the tablets!!!

Old people eh!
Back from breakfast.

First of all, all my comments are in line with the OP and that is a daily dose of 75mgms of Aspirin.

@welshy......I have no idea, as i feel that a combination of statins and Aspirin would be ideal for your condition of hereditary hypercholesterolaemia. Ask your GP for his reasoning.

@ummmm....by fatal you mean can "kill". I have never know 75 mgms of aspirin kill anybody. Yes aspirin can cause bleeds in the lining of the stomach due to irritation, but these are extremely uncommon and any bleed should never cause a death with reasonable medical care. Many small dose aspirins are enteric coated and never come into contact with the stomach lining thus avoiding gastric bleeds.

@ starby....for Christ's sake starby, you are in your 80's and have "bucked" the system......well done. it matters not a jot whether you take aspirins now at your stage in life.......live a bit, eggs bacon sausage, chips now and again.....your have earned that.

It is important to note that aspirin doesn't prevent heart attacks and some cancers, but reduces the incidence.......quite a difference in meaning.
I don't know what dose he was taking. He's dead now..
Nothing to do with aspirin though.
