Cold rolled steel is made by pickling and rolling hot rolled steel at a uniform temperature to a thinner gauge or thickness. Cold rolled is more expensive, as it is used for exposed parts (such as a car panel) and cannot have any surface defects.
Most production cars produced in the last few years are made from Boron Steel with a Zinc coating for corrosion protection.
Boron Steel is much stronger, stiffer and tougher than ordinary Cold rolled steel, so it can be made thinner to give the same strength and stiffness.
Thinner steel makes the car lighter, and therefore improves the cars acceleration and fuel economy. QED!
