I bought my son a adidas original hoody for christmas (£55). The zip has broken on it! I still have the receipt. Can I still return it even though he's had it for 4 months? (posted this question in 2 sections)

Most manufacturers give a 12moths guarantee. However, it is my belief that any item which is less than 6months old is automatically guaranteed against faults which arise from normal usage. However any claim which you pursue will have to be with whomsoever from which you bought the item.

You certainly can take it back and claim a replacement hoody, you're well within your rights.
""If you bought the item within the last six months, it’s the trader’s responsibility to prove the item wasn’t faulty when you bought it.
If you bought your item over six months ago, you may have to prove the fault was not caused by accidental damage or wear and tear.""

Yes do pluck up your courage and return the item you are covered by the sale of goods act 1979 & 1994, if an item is faulty within the first 6 months it is considered to have been supplied faulty and it is for the shopkeeper to prove otherwise, not you.
All you need is proof of purchase, which may or may not be the receipt. Do not delay and do not let the shopkeeper put you off.
