Renault laguna heater trouble

heater burnt out fitted a new one checked fuses still not working any ideas

It might be worth checking that you have voltage going to the unit when the fan switch is in the on position.  If the unit is connected to the car via a multiplug - disconnect the unit and check the voltage at the terminals using a multimeter.  Check this at all the fan speed settings in case the speed switch has burnt out at one speed setting only.  If you dont get an output then you may have a faulty fan swith and/or a wiring problem.  It may be the wiring loom is open circuit somewhere.  I would of hoped if the old unit was drawing excessive current when it went the fuse would have gone before any damage was caused to the wiring.  Do make sure no one has put a higher rated fuse in the circuit which could cause such a problem.  If the wiring has gone short cicuit I would expect it to blow the fuse even if it was over rated so I dont think that is the problem.  Also there is sometimes a box between the fan control and the fan unit which has resistors in it and this is what causes the fan speed to change depending on the swith position.  I have seen this go faulty on a Mk3 Golf and cause problems.  Hope you get it sorted - if not its a good job it's getting warmer :0).
