What I would say is that the sealant guns (even for a non-professional like me) are easy to use 'cos you can get constant pressure which means a constant 'bead' of sealant along your groove. You say 'hand applying the sealant' do you mean a hand squeezing the tube or literally a hand/fingers putting the goo in place? (Most professionals apply the goo and then wet their finger and run it up the grove to even out the sealant)
If you suspect that you need a gun, ring your local DIY and ask. I've always found them very helpful.
