Can anyone beat my chi**y 48 hours?

Yesterday I was at the Renal clinic, which I attend because of problems with my kidneys due to diabetes, and was told, very nicely by a very sympathetic doctor, that my creatine levels have risen and it is more or less time to start thinking about dialysis - I managed not to cry until I reached the car. Today I had a car crash and I think that the car is a write-off. Isla and I both walked away, but we had lost an argument with a lorry; the driver wasn't hurt either. And a friend told me some rather bad news about a friend of ours, I'm hoping that this will now be tthe three things.

Incidentally, my air bags worked, but they filled the car with dust and smoke, and I thought that the car was on fire! Do they always do that?

Cannot beat it and will not try, firstly so glad you are both ok, regards your friend and the bad news, just be as supportive as you can.

A dear friend of mine has begun dialysis 2 weeks ago and as consuming as it is in her life, she realises that it is in truth a life saver for her, may not be much consolation to you but best I can do.

The first generation of vehicle airbags inflated much like a pillow (and stayed inflated) – however the danger of an unconscious passenger suffocating, led to deflating air bags.

The dust is talcum powder (or some similar substance) used to minimise friction burns which would otherwise occur as a result of the fabric’s fast movement across your skin.

Although I have never been in an accident in which the air bags deployed – my understanding is blink and you will miss it all.

my brother has dialysis 3 times a week in hospital - I asked him would he prefer to have it at home and he said ' Oh flip no - it's like belonging to a crazy club at the hospital - we've all got to know each other well and have so many laughs

You certainly have had a time of it and no mistake! Glad you are both more or less unscathed. Try not to be too down about the dialysis, as the alternative is much worse. Kidney disease runs in my family, as does diabetes, which my daughter has had since she was 2, and why I'm always on her case about her sugar levels. I had a cousin who had a dialysis machine installed in his home which saved lots of hospital trips, maybe at some point you could look into this. In the meantime, be kind to yourself and try not to fret too much.

Im so sorry about your news. Change is a scary thing, but hopefully its something you can get used too, and there will be people there who are in the same boat too i bet. I can understand your upset though...will take a while to sink in i think...and the bad news about your friend too...

Sorry to hear about your crappy day. On the plus side, you all walked away from the accident. A car is nothing at the end of the day. Bit rubbish about your dialysis but at least the medical staff are on the case. Hope you aren't feeling too bad (but I bet you really fancy a damn good cry). X

Islasmum, mr mac's kidneys failed 30 something years ago and he's done it all - home dialysis, CAPD, and both day and night shifts at different hospitals as well as having had 2 transplants. Without doubt he recommends day shift in hospital - there is a great camaraderie builds up with the patients. I know it's tough, but if you keep ok on the machine there is no reason you can't continue to have a full life. Mr mac has worked all the way through his treatment (he did have to reduce his hours latterly) and has never let his illness stop him doing anything if he could help it.
