Could anybody tell me how to explain to young children how a tv works?

Try looking at this - it's a good description of how the cathode ray tube works, although a bit advanced for a young child.

There's a box with a window on it. Little people live inside the box and often play football in green and white hooped shirts.
Sometimes, late at night, other people live inside the box. They're often plumbers, au pairs, secretaries and twins, they refuse to wear clothes and they like to do adult keep fit.
