tramadol and itching

Broke my ribs a couple of weeks ago and had been taking cocodomol and ibuprofen for pain relief. However for the past few days I have been taking tramodol in place of the cocodomol. I have started to itch all over since taking the tramodol. Can itching be a side effect of tramodol or is it something else and jst a coincidence that the itching has started since taking the tramodol? It also seems to be worse at night.

Sorry, I can't answer your question, but my mother in law takes Tramodol - and suffers dreadfully from itchy skin. I've never thought it may be the Tramodol causing it. You may have hit on something there. I look forward to reading other replies.

Have you read the enclosed leaflet? One of the side effects is itching
You should see your GP about it IMO

naomi, did your MiL have itchy skin before taking tramodol?
ojread, no enclosed leaflet. I had them off a friend because I couldnt get in to see my GP. (i know they should only be prescribed by a doctor but I was in so much discomfort and the cocodomol werent doing anything)

I have a problem taking any opiate drugs such as Tramadol and morphine and one of the side effects is the itching you describe. I was told by my consultant that my body is not good at processing opiates and using them causes a build up which in turn causes the itching

It,s almost certainly the tramadol.

No big deal.......if pain relief is the priority, then carry on as the itching will subside over time.

On dear, you shouldn't take anything on prescription prescribed for some one else, it could be lethal

If you can take co-codamol, use alongside ibuprofen as well. You can buy 8/500mg OTC
I would stop taking tramadol, now, you have experienced one side effect and it could get worse, you don;t want any more

at the risk of causing offence, please do not drink alcohol when you are taking them.
Please contact your GP tomorrow morning and ask for stronger pain meds.

oj, the cocodomol didnt do a thing for me which is why I started taking tramodol when a friend gave them to me. I know I shouldnt take prescribed medicine without it actually been prescribed for me but I need some pain relief.
Alba, trying to get an appointment with my GP is next to imposibe. Cant get past the receptionist most of the time.

No, she didn't have the itching before taking the Tramadol, nailit - but she's been taking it for years and the itching has never subsided. I'm going to speak to her doctor about it. Thanks very much for your post.

naomi, in the link given by oj above, it lists mild itching as a side effect.

Hers isn't mild itching - it drives her crazy. She sometimes makes herself bleed with scratching.

you have 2 choices
1) carry on with the tramadol and take piriton or similar for the itching
2) go to your own GP and get some pain relief that's more suitable for you.

Personally, if you've stopped the co=codamol i would add in paracetamol to the tramadol

Id take a (non drowsy) anthisthamine aswell xx
