Make sure if a free standing mic, its plugged in correctly and turned on if it has an on off switch
Then test the mic isnt broken (Skype test call or any recording software)
Make sure your mic is turned on and make sure Skype is using it
Tools > Options > Audio Settings
The top box "Microphone" has a dropdown select your microphone in that and underneath there is a line of indicators that will show green in response to the volume level and underneath that select the "Automatically adjust microphone settings".
If that doesnt work then the mic is probably not selected in your Operating system, in which case you will need to right click on the audio icon in your system tray and select recording and select it from their.
If there is a levels tab or advanced tab check for a box that says mic boost or similar and click on that or if its a slider turn it up to get a reasonable levels boost.
Then try Skype settings again

thank folks for all your suggestions. it seems that something isn´t right with my pc. its not as if i´ve changed anything. I was using skype a lot 2 years ago, without any problems. I´ve done the call test twice, and could hardly hear my voice, it sonded like a whisper. my headset works wihen listening to films but i assume the mike must be knackered.
You've not said what version of windows, but there is a mic boost setting in the microphone options
For windows 7 right click on the speaker icon by the clock and select recording devices, then double click on the correct device that you're using, then select the custom tab and tick the microphone boost option.

If you can't find the speaker there just click on the start button and type the following into the run/search box at the bottom of the start menu:
mmsys.cpl
then click on the recording tab, then double click on the correct device that you're using, then select the custom tab and tick the microphone boost option.
