Insulating a cold bedroom above a garage
13 Answers
I intend to take down the ceiling in my garage and put in insulation then replace with new plasterboard. I sometimes watch a programme on Discovery called Holmes on homes which is set in Canada where they frequently do this sort of thing but they use a blue spray foam to insulate and this stuff gets in all the cracks as it expands. Is this sort of product available in the u.k and if so where would I find it? Many thanks in advance.

What's the garage door made of? And do you use the garage for a car? we had a metal up n over door for years and it had no insulation effect and draughts whistled all round it. Even frogs got in.
We got it replaced with a snug-fitting proper double door and that, with the little oil-filled radiator plugged in, makes it lovely, warm, dry and frogless. The room above has benefitted and you might find a similar benefit at less cost and effort than working at height above your head. I'm thinking achey breakey arms.....

Products such as Permaseal are usually used where you want to insulate at high level on or between the roof rafters. I'm assuming you're intending to remove a regular horizontal ceiling and replace it with plasterboard.
If so, then conventional loft roll would be all you need. A layer of 150mm plus a layer of 100mm to give 250mm.
As Moses has said, draught proofing is most important. If you're looking for a foam to fill odd gaps and edges, then spray foam is available in cannister form...........

Alternatively, "Celotex" or "Kingspan foam board (2400 x 1200mm ..... 8'x4') laid over the ceiling joists plus foam.
Or, a modern Multifoil (like a big silver duvet) stapled over the joists ... all edges taped.
