used my card in the US and also switzerland last year to try and purchase fuel at garages.

The fuel pump wants me to enter a zip code which living in the uk i dont have, is there a generic code you have to enter as it wouldnt accept my uk postal code.

the cards used at the time where Lloyds/TSB Airmiles (Amex and mastercard) which is now Avios and i assume i would have the same problem with.

Cheers

I have no idea - I'd suggest you ask your card providers, they should know.
You need to go into the shop and pay, you can't use pay at pump with a foreign credit card (you can with a debit card as then it just asks for the PIN)
At one time it would work if you put the zip code of the British Embassy in Washington - but I suspect it doesn't any more if it wasn't an urban legend in the first place
Is it not 0044?
no that's the international dialling code for the UK.
You are right Zac
You have to go in and have your card swiped first - they then unlock the pump and allow you to fill up - then you go in afterwards and finish the transaction.

This what we did last year.
Zip codes in America are our postcodes in UK as far as I am aware so don't know what you would have to enter if it refused your postcode.
