What I want to know is do I use the power I produce and feed excess into the grid or do I use all the power from the grid I need and feed all the power I produce into the grid?

In the UK, the excess gets fed into the grid. Can't see any reason why it would be advantageous for the latter to happen.

Well the government and the electricity supplier each pay an amount per kilowatt to me .

In the UK the installers have an obligation to explain all matters to the client.Is this not the case in Aus?

The government would have to be so keen on consumer generation that they forced the companies to buy at a higher price than they sell for, for the latter option to be worthwhile. (Wouldn't consider that beyond any government though.) Without knowing, I'd say it was almost certain you just sell what you generate but don't use.

I stillneed a new meter fitted to measure how much goes to the grid. I suppose I can ask then but was talking to my son and he presumed one way and I the other. The gov pays me 16c the supplier 9.6c. I buy power@31c first 200 k then 35c then40c approx.

Plus a supply charge. In Australia cos it's a state run thing it varies from state to state.
