My friend has lost her job and is half way through a mobile phone contract. If she were to ring her mobile phone provider and explain she can no longer afford the bill, will they put her on a different contract?

No. They are impossible to deal with. From their point of view your friend has entered into a legally binding agreements fro the length of the contract. There is nothing in it for them to let her out of the contract. She should stop using the phone to ensure that no other cots are incurred but she will remain liable for the basic monthly fee for the remainder of the term.
I doubt it very much!!
As long as she hasn't went over her minutes, texts & data allowed in her contract for the previous months, all your friend can do is phone the provider and see if they will downgrade her tariff. I know Three do it!
No harm in asking. Problem is if they do so then anyone could phone up claiming personal circumstances as justification. Just hope they value goodwill more than insisting on their rights.
your friend should under her circumstances pay off her contract asap. Would it be cheaper in the long run to pay with her credit card & then pay her cc bill monthly ( check it out ). No way will the phone company let her off the hook.
