What happens to all the tons of grit that are spread on the roads year after year. I'm guessing that most of it is washed into the drains but then surely the sewers would become clogged over time? (not sure what section to post this in so went for this one...)

much of the grit is salt which dissolves and is washed away.

Yes, the grit gets washed into the drains. But it is a statutary requirement that local councils clear these drains on a regular basis, e.g....
