Got a nice soft polyester dressing gown, massive problem with static shocks! any ideas how to stop it, or shall I go back to the old towelling type gown?

Just wash it and make sure that there's fabric conditioner in the rinse. That'll cure it.
Dust it with talcum powder and shake out. That should solve the problem
A quick spritz with a spray of water generally breaks the static temporarily.
