Basically any data connection via a SIM card, so if your dongle is a mobile (as opposed to WiFi) then you can't use Skype with it. Basically as a mobile phone company they don't want people sending voice over data networks when they could be selling them voice over voice networks
interesting Kloof, we're on vodafone dongle but haven't tried skype with it.
Surely though, it would use a lot of data and eat into whatever amount you have loaded on to the dongle?
Id have a word in mobile phone shops to find out.
Most wouldn't allow it I suspect (I don't KNOW) as all their business models are going to be the same, there are probably workarounds but they'd all be in contravention of the Ts & Cs if they say not to. I certainly wouldn't try to use it for video calling as it would use up you data plan extremely quickly.
So...it is ,I think, a no-no with all dongles...actually,I have a T-Mobile Wireless Pointer now...this allows others in the house etc. to use it as well as it doesn`t have to be plugged into the laptop etc.but after charging, just place on anywhere you like, table ,desk etc.I tend to leave mine plugged into the mains plug sockets..depends where I am.
,
Alba...I also use it when my Virgin internet is down...which does happen from time to time...just have to unplug my Virgin modem first, otherwise the WP won`t work.
Have had a look and will show to Mr Alba when he omes home. They seem much better than a basic dongle where, as you know, you're dependent upon reeiving a signal when it suits 'them' :-)
Dongles are a pain...my grandchildren have them and they are always getting bent and broke ...if the usb plug was on the long edge, that would not happen so easily as they would not be sticking out so far. They have broadband at home but in non WiFi places they need a dongle. When we all go to the caravan,my Wireless Pointer serves everyone...usually three laptops and smart phone.on the go at once.
Fantastic.
i am off to Windermere next week and there is only internet access in the hotel public lounge...so you can guess what I will be taking with me!!!!!
Alba, it still needs the mobile signal, it's just more convenient as you don't have to plug it into a machine and others can use it at the same time such as iPads and other tablets.
