my brother in law has asked me if I can look after his 2 year old daughter on Sunday. I need to buy a child car seat but I don't know which one would be suitable.

Any ideas from ABers?

Hasn't he one he can loan you, along with the child? They're quite expensive for occasional use.

nope,
If you only have the child for one day it may be better to ask around your friends if they have one you can borrow.
Someone I know bought one from Morrisons Supermarket and if I remember correctly it was between £10-£15.
if you are only looking after for the day, a carseat sounds like a big extravagance. It will probably be at least £120 for the cheapest one.
If you are getting one, personally i would go for britax, but that's just preference. Get one that goes up in weight or size too because if you have her ahgain you'd probably like to still use it
ps, you need to know her weight
You think there would be a website where you could just hire them.
There are a few, depends on location

Google, 'Hire a child car seat'
argos is usually the cheapest, you might find a car seat for less than 40 quid
found one on argos but couldnt copy and paste it, its down to 34.99 from 40 quid, good luck
If you just take care of it for one day, i don't think you have the need to buy one.
Seems a bit of an expense for just one day.... but....

This one has some pretty good reviews:
