Finding Whether My 'friend' Is Still Alive?

Hi all and hope you can help..have had a 35 yr relationship with a man....once boyfriend...but 30 yrs as intermittent 'friends'...he has always had a 'few probs'... but calls me now and again to catch up. He has always moved around after relationship breakups and calls me for lengthy chats which I have indulged him in. Last time heard was in the LEEDS area but when we spoke he sounded really out of it. and I sort of fear the worst.my question... there are birth/ death records but I really am not sure of area...is there a national and non area specific list of deaths anywhere? Thankflly his name not John Smith so if poss, it wld be fairly easy to find, but don't know where to go? Thanks...and by the way am a little useless with too much techno.

yes deaths are centrally registered here:
http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/

and as long as you know his full name and date of birth then you should be able to apply for a search and then copy death cert though if he's not dead it would mean a waste of money

thanks DJHawkes..infact, you have exactly the same initials as my missing friend.....it's not you is it D? Otherwise, I think I will wait for him to emerge again in a year or so when the next relationship goes kaput...thanks all!
