When I flush the toilet the water continues to run into the bowl until I flush again and it stops. What can I do to prevent this?

It sounds like your flush valve is sticking.

If it's a handle type, then maybe one of these..........

If it's a push button one, then something like this....

hey.. The Builder!! (sorry coccinelle!)

why do shredded bits of loo roll come back into the pan after it's flushed?? nothing untoward has happened.. it's been doing this for probably a year!

thanks :o)
Try changing your make of toilet roll :)
Would be cheaper than a new toilet.
Mine does this sometimes - we have a top button flush - we just bib the button and you can hear the valve snapping shut
Sorry to be so personal, Sara, but it may be your flushvalve too ;o)

But, in the meantime, try raising the water level in the cistern. A simple adjustment. No anaesthetic needed ;o)
thank you.. virtually painless ;o)

Oh dear, looks like I'm going to have to get outside help then. Thought I might just have something to do in the cistern :-(
