Problems With Digital Tv Reception...

I have an LG tv with built in freeview that I have retuned more than once recently. One problem is that I can't get all the channels that are available in our area (and in fact lost some channels when I retuned... btw I live in an urban area with good coverage). The second problem is that the picture/sound break up when I put the on screen guide up on the screen, and sometimes even starts to break up when I change the volume and the on-screen volume indicator comes up on the screen. Could anyone suggest what the problem might be? I have another TV in a different room that receives via a Humax hard disc recorder and I don't have any problems with that (it receives from the same rooftop aerial of course).

I was gong to suggest that your ariel was maybe not fully aligned, but if its working ok on the recorder then it could be the tv at fault.

Have you tried disconnecting the recorder, so that the ariel signal is only having to supply 1 device to see if that makes a difference.

You could also try connecting the tv to the connection for the recorder - to see if the fault appears there, in which case it could be the cable/connection that is at fault.

The tuners in different receiving devices (whether they be TVs, PVRs, DVD recorders or whatever) have differing 'sensitivities' [i.e. their ability to handle weak signals]. Your Humax device obviously has a higher sensitivity than the TV set with which you're experiencing problems.

You've described the classic symptoms of insufficient signal strength. If the signal from your aerial is divided by a simple (unamplified) splitter like one of these

then you should replace it with one of these

If you've already got a signal amplifier in place you should get an aerial installer to replace both your aerial and the associated cabling.

Many thanks Tuvok and Buenchico, I will disconnect the recorder and if the problem TV starts working ok I will know it is a signal strength problem and get a booster...
