Problem With Smell Coming From Behind Fridge

This morning I came into my kitchen to find a horrible smell. It was most apparent above my fridge, which is under a work surface. I thought it was to do with some fish that I had cooked the day before but it was still there after I had scrubbed all the surfaces down and cleaned the oven thoroughly. Now I am worried that it might be an electrical, or gas fault in the fridge. Is there some gas in fridge mechanism? Can anyone help?

A fishy smell is sometimes associated with overheating electrical items. The fishy smell comes from the plastic.Check to see if any of your electrical plugs and sockets are warm to the touch.

We had a fishy smell in the bathroom which turned out to be a dead mouse and in our old property which had a fishy smell in the hall which turned out to be faulty wiring.

we had some serious sewage smells for some time. Turned out to be one of us has celiac disease (I have no sense of smell so had no idea).

Probably electrical if it smells fishy, as Chrisgel says. Check your fridge and the plug.

Thanks everyone. I have checked for dead bodies and there do not appear to be any, although I did have an ants nest behind the freezer, which is next to the fridge. Some of them were in the back of the freezer. I've pulled both fridge and freezer out and got rid of the ants. Smell is slightly less horrible now. Fingers crossed. Just one more thing. Is the gas from fridge or freezer dangerous?

Check that the condensation drain in your fridge is clear. Modern fridges have a drain hole towards the bottom at the back. this drains condensation onto a plate at the rear of the fridge which is warmed by the motor and evaporates the liquid.
Mould can grow in the drain tube which smells horrible and blocks the tube. A softish piece of wire pushed down the tube clears it. I also squirt a little milton down the tube using a syringe without a needle.

no, freon is not toxic although not great for the environment. You will know if its escaping because the fridge will cease to work.

Folks, I finally found out the source of the smell. Not burnt out plugs, dead/frisky mice or fish in the works. It was milk (yes, I have been crying over spilt milk!). I remembered I had knocked over a jug of milk in the fridge last week and it must have gone down the drain hole at the back. It has been busily turning itself into stinky cheese ever since (and getting riper and riper by the day!) Woofgang, you were on the right track. I had thought about Milton myself and put some down the drain this morning. Smell not totally gone but cooked Milton definitely smells better than cooked Stilton! Thanks so much.

Just look at the behind of fridge, you'll find their a box of water which is placed for the wasted water. Whenever fridge light turned off melted ice and other kind of liquid flows to the box.
