Microsoft Outlook And Yahoo

this driving me mad - not only has MS outlook managed to delete about 10 years worth of my emails from my yahoo account, every few months it is deleting the last few months!

how can I stop this? I want my emails left in my yahoo account - but I have no idea why it does it - i certainly haven't told it too, and I dont know how to stop it.

I would actually like to delete the whole program as ive lost trust with it - but its the only copy i have of many of my emails now, so i'm stuck with it.

any ideas how i can stop this?

why do you think it's Outlook doing this? - are you sure you haven't set up your Yahoo account to auto-archive every so often?

I don't use Yahoo but it sounds like it is archiving your emails every so often. Is there anything in your menus about archiving.
If it has archived them it should be possible to get them back.

Well you've not given much info...

But how much mail do you expect any mail provider to store for free?

Anyhow, set outlook to download all mails... store the PST file somewhere safe and set it as an additional mail file and you'll have access to them (under a different heading in the outlook folder list)

boxtops - because i have had the same account for over 10 years and up until i installed outlook about 5-6 months ago, i had every single email i had saved still in my yahoo account.
i haven't set anything, to my knowledge - i don't think yahoo even has that option, does it?
i certainly didn't set it to delete anything from my yahoo account.
it took me a while to notice they were gone - after doing searches and things were not showing up.

the email are no longer in my yahoo account anywhere - I have looked - can anyone tell me where they'd be?

in outlook - it has emails from 2012/2013 and the odd one from inbetween that - and also has about 10 from 2001.

problem is the backup only stores 3 and deletes the last one so even if the mail was originally in there the newer backups have replaced them.

chuck - i expect it to store my emails indefinitely until i choose to delete or until it tells me otherwise - it should not just delete messages.

i don't want the emails to delete themselves from yahoo.

i have just found somewhere on yahoo that says that email clients do delete emails - but it cannot be stopped!
and the only way to deal with it is to ask the desktop software co for advice!

i cant believe they just do this without telling people!

I do not want to use it anymore but i cannot delete it because it has all my remaining emails on it!
it seems to just be downloading my emails without my knowledge and i cant find a way to stop it!

how can i recover the remaining emails and still have access to them without having to use outlook?

any ideas?

I had a similar problem.Sometimes talk talk deleted them and other times they simply vanished.I dare not use MS outlook any more and problem now solved.

MS Outlook can be set not to 'auto archive' emails. Right click on the 'Inbox' and select Properties, then go to the Auto Archive tab and put a 'tick' in the 'Do not archive items in this folder', click Apply and OK.

I used my settings to archive after 3 mths and then archive them to a separate folder in My Documents. Not lost an email for many years, other than those I deleted.

If you keep on leaving them on Yahoo's server there will come a time when it becomes full and you won't be able to receive anymore. If Yahoo's servers ever go down then you might lose them as well.

Yahoo! can not tell whether a request to delete is from your client against your wishes, or from you wanting a deletion. I don't think many would approve of some kind of Capcha check either, so it's true, it can't be stopped because it can't be recognised as a deletion request you don't want. If you don't want things deleted it has to be set on your e-mail client not to do it.

Check all the setting on your client and try to find the one set to delete after a certain time. Better still download on to your PC and then the mail in the Yahoo! account can be deleted immediately it has confirmed receipt of your PC getting the e-mail.

OG - thats exactly the reason they should tell people before deletion!
they absolutely should have a captcha or something to warn people beforehand!

they KNOW it will automatically delete, whether you have set it to or not, so they should warn people!

at no point have i ever confirmed or requested they delete my mail, so they have not 'obeyed' any instructions that have come from me at all - claiming a technical fault or a stupid bit of programming that fools yahoo into thinking its come from me, makes it all ok and somehow my fault is ludicrous!

i have checked settings an cannot see anywhere that asks me to set a deletion time period, that tells me its going to delete after a time - or even an option to adjust/ those settings.

the archive function was off - so not only has it deleted my yahoo mail, it did not give me the option to store it before it deleted it - why delete something before even downloading it?

the problem is it has deleted mail that it has NOT been downloaded onto my laptop - so there is about 4 years worth of emails gone completely!

to claim i should have 'just known' this is ridiculous.
if i didnt know this, then im pretty sure plenty of other people wont know either.

i fail to see why it needs to delete the online stuff anyway - there is no option to stop it either - unless someone can tell me how?

most things ask for confirmation before deleting things - because they know in general most people don't just want random bulk deletions.

this is nothing to do with the amount of emails i have with yahoo.
as i say it was set NOT to archive - but its still deleting - but not archiving.


i have found mozilla thunderbird deletes nothing - and thankfully it has all those emails saved in it - so im going to delete outlook - its a shame as i liked it otherwise.
i am surprised that MS would do this.

yes thanks slack - but as i have said - it was already set to not archive - and its still deleting the emails but not saving them

it has also simply deleted about 3 years worth of emails from my yahoo and from its own lists - and they are gone completely from both those places - it should not be doing that

this is why i am pished off.

well, set up an account with gmail or someone and forward the emails you want to keep to it. (Before they too are deleted.)

My gmail currently has a limit of 15GB, which must be thousands of emails.

thanks jno - i have discovered i can export all the saved emails in outlook to Thunderbird, so i now have majority of my emails back - all in one place = and i can choose whether they are deleted or not - so i am going to just delete outlook.
i have my outlook backups 'just in case' too

i can also then back up thunderbird using MozBackUp
