Photography Question

I suppose this is the nearest category for this question.
just got an Nikon D80 DSLR camera with a standard 18-200mm lens.
I want to take some photos of fireworks as i live in Lewes, a bonfire night mecca. I was looking at doing some close-ups....my garden is next to one of the fire sites so the huge fireworks explode overhead, or possibly going up on the downs and looking down on the town so would possibly be a mile away from the action.
I have a tripod and might considder a remote shutter release.
Any suggestions, tips and ideas for settings or getting the best results ?
Thanks in advance
