Gps Locations

How do you find the GPS numbers for a known location, can you do it on Google maps? I've been given the GPS numbers over the phone for somewhere I want to find and it's 2 sets with combinations of apostrophes and one set has East on the end but they don't work in google or maps. I know the rough area where it is, how could I find the figures for somewhere near like a town?

You can type them into Google maps you just need the right conventions, first set are north/south and should be entered as degrees minutes seconds so 52º 20' 12" then a comma and the second set in the same format, the degrees symbol (º) on Windows is generated by holding the ALT key and pressing 248

Thanks so far. First I think I've written them down wrongly as Jno's link put me in deepest China and one of them on google maps came up in Czechoslovakia and the other in USA! I'll try your method in Wiki methyl as I know this place is less than 2km from a well known town so if I can get that town I should be on my way. The girl who gave them to me over the phone obviously didn't understand them much more than I did.

Well if you place a mark on Google maps on the town and then right click and select 'what is here' (or similar) you should get the decimal latitude and longitude, these will be similar to the degrees, minutes seconds that you presumably have.

Simplest way is to download Google Earth and then simply name the place in "Location" and when it loafs up hover your mouse pointer over the position and the proper Lat/Lon will appear on the screen...
