Soda siphons

Bit of a random question, but does anyone know if soda siphons are illegal in UK bars? The reason i ask is i've heard the gas used to pressurise the containers might be illegal... and i need to know if it's ok to use them or not. Also does anyone know where i can get the definite legal answer from. Thank you.

The gas used to pressurise them is carbon dioxide - the same as for any 'fizzy drink'. If that were illegal, then Coke, Pepsi, Fanta, lemonade etc etc etc would also be illegal.

You mean fizzy, keg beer as distinct from real draught ale.  Anyone using CO2 (or for that matter, the common CO2/Nitrogen mix) to dispense beer would never get in the Good Beer Guide!!

I know it sounds stupid, but we need to use them at work and there was definitely a story about something in them being harmful. I just needed to know for sure.

I think the reason for the lack of popularity of soda syphons is because bars never used to charge for a dash of soda.  Now that all mixers (inc soda) come out of the hydra thing they can charge the going rate.

hello seb (i used to go to school with a seb brown in cambridge) why don't you contact the local council / whoever gives you the licence to operate a bar they would be able to point you in the right direction re rules and regulations of equipment being used... though i'd be amazed if sodastream has any danger issues

a few years ago I worked behind a bar and was told the syphons were not allowed anymore, don't know why though sorry. Staff used them outside in summer after a long night for water fights! Maybe that's why my boss kept them?!
