On Friday we were assessed for costings for Mic's care. We were told we would have to pay full costings. (What a surprise, you work you save, you pay your dues. I wish we had pi$$ed it up the wall but that's another story.)

Anyway I asked about attendance allowance. Answer NO as Mic is not 65.

I asked about carers allowance. Another NO as I am in receipt of the state pension.

It's a good job I don't have a gas oven.

Are there any other allowances we may be entitled to? They must be NON means tested. Thanks (from an exhausted Jeza)

P.S I also asked about the lots of extra money being spent on electricity for washing sheets. buying sanitary products etc. Can you guess the answer.

Hi Jeza, If I were you I'd have a chat with someone at Citizens Advice about what benefits you maybe entitled to.

How are you coping ?.
Hi Jeza, just as Tony said and choux's site looks as if it might be a help. Love to you both and hope things improve. I know we'll end up in the same boat

non taxable
Give them a bell, Jeza.
Good link of choux.
I'm sorry I can't help or give you any advice, Jeza. I just wanted to say that I hope you get things sorted.
Question Author
Fusion. The financial person did mention that but said as Mic is 65 in June it would probably take that long to sort.
You can also apply for carers allowance, Jeza. You will have to fill out some tedious mundane forms, bUt it will be worth it.
Question Author
P.P according to them you can only get A A after you're 65.
Do you have a DIAL network in your area Jeza ?
http://www.scope.org.uk/dial
They are brilliant at helping in these sort of situations and help with any any arduous form filling you may have to do .

Question Author
Will check that out shaney. I'm now off to feed Mic his dinner. Back later.
That's rubbish, Jeza, you could even have it back dated. I have helped my own parents claim in the past and another family member. You would be surprised what you can claim for. Until I started to look into it for family members, I always thought it would be a no win situation.

I will look up some phone numbers for you tomorrow, Jeza and get back to you.

P P. Mic cannot get out of bed let alone to the bathroom. As I said I'm off. Back later.
About carers allowance...from www.gov.uk

Underlying entitlement
You can’t normally get 2 income-replacement benefits (eg Carer’s Allowance and the State Pension) paid together.

This is called the ‘overlapping benefit rule’. If you can’t be paid Carer’s Allowance because of this rule, you have ‘underlying entitlement’ to Carer’s Allowance instead.

This might mean you could get:

the carer premiums in Jobseeker’s Allowance and Income Support
the extra amount for carers in Pension Credit
the carer element in Universal Credit

I don't know if this is of any help,or if it just echos what you've already been told. It seems to imply that there are other ways to get help.
What is the reason you don't get means tested support- is it because of your household income or is it because of savings.
If it's because of income then, whether we agree with it or not, that's the way things work.
If it's because of savings then yes, that's the way things work, (and I can see arguments for and against). And if it's any consolation, when your expenditure causes your savings to fall below the threshold you should be eligible for support.
