..We went to see this production at Nottingham's Theatre Royal last night What an incredible show. We all know the story and those wonderful songs, Maria-America-Somewhere-Tonight-Officer Krupke and others. The whole cast is terrific, wonderful singing and dancing and dramatic acting A hugely impressive backdrop set uses gigantic retro black and white photographic images of New York City even under the Brooklyn Bridge for the 'Rumble' scene. The main set uses what appears to be nothing but scaffolding to create fire escapes and balconies, it is moveable too to show different scenes. The orchestra was tremendous, belting out those memorable Leonard Bernstein tunes and with lyrics from Stephen Sondheim, well what a combination. This touring production is simply wonderful and if you can get to a show near you I guarantee it will be as memorable an event for you, as it was for us.
WSS is the only musical I like. I'll look to see if it's coming to a my city. I've got the CD where Leonard Bernstein is conducting the orchestra & Kiri Tikanawa & Jose Carreras are singing.
