My right shoe heel has developed a rather annoying squeak when i walk .

Whenever i passed someone , i'm now walking on my toes in order to avoid them thinking - what a freak

I have a pair of flat shoes like that. My grandma always used to tell me that shoes squeaked to tell everyone that you hadn't paid for them.....

boxtops,that's what they used to say about squeaking shoes where I come from.Wonder why?

I'd surmise that new shoes squeaked and people could only afford new shoes on credit. Certainly all our shoes came on credit and we weren't particularly poor.
