never had one - never needed one

however, long story short, i have been persuaded to buy one when i change my car in a few months

my question is this:- once purchased, is there a running cost or contract to run, or anything that one has to pay to use it, or keep it updated?

OH goes on-line every few months to update his maps, but I don't hink he pays for the facility, it just comes with the machine.

I have a Tom Tom, one off price, and a free annual up-date from their Website, not sure if that applies to all of them though.
I think with some you have to pay to update the maps, with others it's included. But otherwise no contract that I know of.

thank you, folks
excel, will the sat nav be standard on the car ( built in ) ?.
Question Author

tony, not unless it is in the car that i choose

my brother in law suggests i buy a car without one, and buy the sat-nav separately
Just wondered, excel, because that would be a different kettle of fish.

please elaborate
They usually use a disc, excel. Pretty expensive to buy a new disk.
Have you got a tablet? You can download an app quite cheaply (about £30) tether it to your mobile phone via bluetooth and you will get access to updated travel info and be rerouted if there are major hold ups. We have co-pilot and it receives regular updates free of charge. Also advises you of speed cameras and beeps as you go past one, along with letting you know if you wander over the speed limit

i am using a tablet to talk to you right now, ubasses

that looks like one option to consider, thank you
I use a Nexus 7 as a satnav, fantastic, much better than my TomTom.

I don't need to tether it to my mobile phone because the app I use doesn't need to be connected to the internet to work. Free updates via wifi, too

another possible option - thank you, hc4361
mine is a free lifetime update one - worth the extra cash so you dont have to keep paying for new maps.

i did have one that in the main was fine, but i couldnt seem to update it - can't remember why now, faults etc i think, but possibly also cost and being outdated ... i just carried on using it, but gradually began to notice stuff like roundabouts etc that it did not know existed, and itd tell me to go right into a brick blocked road or something.

i eventually bought a new one when i was hit with a speeding fine, because the satnav was telling me the old speed limit on the road, instead of the new 10 mph less one ... so i was travelling 12-13 over in stead of the 2-3 i thought ...
