Camera Electronics Help

Anyone a whizz at understanding camera battery/charging issues? I have a Samsung HX10 camcorder, about 5 years old, used regularly without problems. The battery recently went flat but when put on charge the light never came on at all (usually goes orange to green). Assumed the charger was knackered so bought a new correct charging unit - the type where you take the battery out and put in in a unit. This seemed to work well and light change confirmed battery full. My OH also checked battery with a voltmeter (?) which also gave a full reading of 7.5 ish. However when I put the battery back in the camera it's just enough power to switch it on, give me the low battery warning and shut itself down. Battery still reads as full on the VM.
Sorry this is long winded but I need to get this sorted - is it a battery fault (don't want to buy a new one if it's not) or is it a camera fault. If it's a camera fault is it repairable at a cost value better than chucking and replacing?
