Simply, an electron gun fires electrons to the back of the screen (cathode ray tube (CRT)).  These electrons cause the phosphorescant pixels on the CRT to illuminate.  Each pixel is made up of three elements; one red, one green and one blue.  As the pixel will only illuminate for a very short amount of time the electron stream from the gun is steered, by magnets, from top to bottom and side to side, so that it scans across the whole area of the screen.  The amount of full scans that the electron stream performs per second is the refresh rate of the TV.  Different colours are made by causing the three elements of the pixel to illuminate with different intensities.
