I think even a curtain rail expert would at the very least need to know the manufacturer and model name to be able to help you.
I did this once, and it worked, but I was able to do it because I had two identical rails, and one of them had the thread still in the right place.
I do remember, it was complicated, and even though I'm fairly mechanically minded, it didn't work the way I thought it should or would.......sorry.....do you have any similar rails in your house?
