4 Stroke Lawnmower

My lawnmower wouldn't start so I stripped the carburettor down to clean the float chamber, etc., I re-built it but it still wouldn't start so I removed the spark plug and pulled the recoil cord and black oil spluttered out of the hole, there was also black oil "inside" the spark plug. Could anybody advise me how this occurred and how to overcome the problem? Many thanks for your help
