Exactly a year ago we bought a dining table which seats six and can extend either end to seat 8. As recommended by the company we waxed it when it was delivered (its light oak) and the wax we bought from the company as well.weve gone to extend it for Xmas day and the two extendable ends are a completely different colour. Not just a slight difference but a blindingly obvious difference. It's not been in harsh sunlight - it's just been in a normal room with a big window, like most table would be.ive taken photos and sent them to the company but they just say it must have been in very strong sunlight for months. In this country?? It hasn't been but they aren't budging and it cost £600.

Can I ask where you bought it Smow? Was it Oak Furnitureland? I've had problems with them, would never buy from again.

Yes it was!
Smow, are you sure that the extendable ends are oak?
you should go via trading standards .. not fit for purpose ?
Thought it might be, I paid £500 for a sideboard and the corner chipped off (about an inch not a small piece)

they didn't want to know. I always look after my stuff and there is only me any my elderly mother here so we hadn't banged into it with toys or similar as they wanted to suggest, never got any joy.

Danny yes the whole table is solid oak. I'm really shocked at how stark the difference is.
I am a great fan of Twitter to bring a company's attention to a problem.

@OFLoakfurniture Disgusted at v poor response to my complaint re poor quality of table I bought.

It usually gets things moving :D

In the meantime, Smow, buy a bigger tablecloth.

Ahh great! Thankyou.
Are the extensions alot lighter in colour than the main table. If so then you haven't exposed them to natural daylight as the main table has been. All natural wood will darken or 'mellow' with age and exposure. I appreciate this info is too late for you now but may be of use to you in the future.
Question Author
They're not lighter - if anything it's the main table that's lighter, but it's only 12 months old and the difference is so stark.
Item 1.3 of their product specification:
All our furniture is made from natural wood and accordingly appearances may vary. Some woods will mellow with age and exposure to sunlight........

Update - discovered I'd paid for 5 yr insurance on said table. Sent photos and they are coming to inspect it on Thursday . Still don't hold much hope of getting anywhere but you never know.
Fingers crossed!
Question Author
They'll probably come out with something daft like I'm meant to have it fully extended the whole time(impossible as too big) or that it shouldn't be near daylight! But yes fingers crossed indeed!
It is a fact that the wood exposed to light will change colour relative to that which isn't. In the days when we had your problem we took the extra leaves out and left them exposed to light in a spare bedroom.
