Mercedes To Build Cars In Mexico

A lot is said about Mercedes and BMW plans to build these cars in Mexico, and Trump threatens huge import taxes if that happens.

But both companies have been building cars in German and them exporting them to America, where they are enthusiastically bought by Americans.

So what is it so different if they built in Mexico ?

Maybe he objects to using cheaper labour to create products that then undercut home produced ones ? Strange for a businessman, would have thought he was in favour of using labour wherever it was cheapest and short-circuiting the national labour market; but I suppose being president gives a different set of priorities.

He wants more, it's the American way.

If he is not threatening huge import duties on cars made elsewhere in the world, but only on ones made in Mexico, that doesn't make sense !

Not that I am expecting Trump to make any sense at all, but I live in hope !

But it won't be immigrants building the cars. They are to do it in Mexico.

no different, Trump is protecting US jobs, so no doubt those imported from anywhere will incur tariffs unless some sort of deal is done. I think Mexico was just an example. Trump wants them to build in the US.

I asked why huge import tariff are going to be imposed on German cars made on Mexico, but not on German cars made in Germany.

how do you know they are not going to be imposed on imports from Germany? Perhaps the US and Germany have Done one of those things we used to do before the EU, known as a "Trade Deal".

There may be a deal with BMW importing cars from European sites because, as already shown above, they manufacture and export large quantities of some models in the US.

No mikey, It's a separate deal done between the EU and US, nothing to do with Trump. Obviously Mexico and the US have not got a trade deal in place. Years of EU subjugation have made you forget what a trade deal is.

err, yes they have, it's called NAFTA and has existed for 23 years.

Well he did promise to rip up agreements so i guess NAFTA will be included.

He has to create jobs, the rust belt is a real problem, Detroit is broke and people are pretty desperate. Importing cars will have to be high on his hit list.
