Be assured, the insurance company WILL find out that you avoided giving them information, and as such WILl INVALIDATE your insurance in the event of a claim being made against you. And believe me that will cost you far more than the increase in your insurance quote.

My point wasn't based on the scenario you describe.
Obviuously, if all the work is done without insurance companies being involved they you have no need to tell them, and they would look at you slightly askance if you did.
My point was based on the general notion that you should hide something from them that they should know about.
That is not only illegal, but downright stupid.
