Not only does your oven have the metal tray, the entire inside of the oven is made from metal.  It may be covered with a layer of plastic materail to make it easier to keep clean and general esthetics but is made from metal to contain the generated microwaves.  You can use aluminium foil in the oven as well... just don't place it close to any of the walls and dont "wad" it up into any kind of a ball. Many frozen food containers meant for microwave use are made of aluminium, by the way.  Additionally, the grid in the door you use to view the inside is metal... again, to contain the microwaves...
As an aside, being an a Colonist, may I ask what is a boffin?

For Clanad:

Glad to see you using the British spelling of "aluminium"!

Thank you for all your help that has explained it perfectly.

PS  I looked at that link and I would hasten to point out that it is not an insult in this country as their final entry would suggest, at least I have always considered it to be merely a phrase meaning someone who is an expert in that sort of science type field.
Clanad, boffin is exlained well on World Wide Words and is the term of choice for British tabloid writers. Have a look at these search results to get an idea of how it's used: site:www.thesun.co.uk boffins.

Sorry about the link. I'll try again:
