A friend has asked me to go to a Derek Acorah show. Can anyone tell me what actually happens and if I'm likely to be freaked out by the whole thing. I've recently lost my Dad and my friend lost hers six weeks ago. I just wonder if it's a wise thing to do?

I'm trying hard to think of what a good outcome would be for you from going to see somebody like that.

If you don't get "contact" with your father you'll most likely feel disapointed.

If you do and believe what you hear you'll probably just want more and more

If you do and don't believe it you'll probably feel dreadfully hurt.

What are you hoping for?

Really I'm hoping to be convinced that there is life after death. I'm very sceptical but losing my Dad has made me think more about it. I guess I'm the perfect punter and these shows are probably made up of like-minded people but as I say, I'm slightly nervous about what is involved and wouldn't go if I thought he'd be on the stage speaking in my Dad's Scottish accent - that would be freaky as I believe he's a scouser!! :-)

I went to see Derek last week and he was great. I totally believe in 'spirits' remaining after people die. I haven't lost anyone since my nan died 11 years ago so I didn't go expecting a message from anyone. Derek was quoting the names of the spirits he had with him and also the names of members of their family, most of the names he was giving were correct.

I have seem other mediums in spiritualist churches that do the same thing. Some are far better than others, some of them throw so many names at you there are bound to be a couple you recognise! Some don't give names, they just describe the person they have with them and somethimes the description could fit a lot of people!

The first time I went, a friend who had come with me received a message that was completely accurate and that was what convinced me to believe in it.

Oh and by the way, Derek doesn't adopt the accent of the spirits he is talking to! It is more along the lines of this:

'I have a gentleman with me, about 5 ft 10, dark hair, I feel he died with a chest complaint.....he found it hard to breathe towards the end.....I don't feel he died in a hospital...he was aged about 60'

Someone will at this point raise their hand to indicate that they recognise this person - sometimes more than one will and he will give more details to narrow it down.

He will then usually describe the character of the person which is usually very accurate and then say 'Who is Paul?' and so it goes on.

It is interesting and I've heard similar tales from friends at work. Is he only in contact with recent spirits (can't think of a better way to put this) or does he have the spirits of people from years back or does he not say? Does he ever have angry or emotional spirits? Do people become emotional? Sorry to bombard you with questions. Thanks.

I find Derek very beleivable, a talented first class entertainer. Though after that episode where he supposedly became possessed and gave an oscar winning performance, I think the only spirits he has dealings with come out of a bottle.

I can't believe that Derek Acorah is anything but genuine. He lives not far from me and I know of somone who met him by chance in a shop. He immediately picked up on her sudden loss and passed a very relevant message from her loved one. A few days later he went out of his way to do something very kind for her family which leaves me in no doubt that he is a very genuine, caring and spitirtual man. I am going to see him in Blackpool next week, and I am really looking forward to it, and of course I am hoping he has a message for me too!!!
